Last week, the Welland Development Commission announced that over $200 million in investments have been made in the city over 5 years. A number the progressive city has much to be proud of and investors excited in. In the past it was easy to be disappointed in the loss of manufacturing in Niagara but, these investments numbers are painting a new picture. One of change and prosperity.

Welland is not the only city in the region making waves for it’s recent developments, perhaps the stand out lies in St. Catharines where over 1.2 billion dollars in investments have been made over the past 10 years.

Here’s a look at how these Niagara cities are attracting investors and leading their cities towards growth.

Investments in Welland

Dollars: $2 million +

Welland’s economic strategy is focused on four emerging investment opportunities: green energy, health and wellness, advanced manufacturing and bioproducts. The city is building quicker than other areas of the region and a lot of that is owed to smart incentive programs and available land for investors.

Niagara’s largest municipality, St. Catharines, has an economic strategy focused on growing four specific industries including digital media, health and wellness, bioscience and manufacturing. Investments have been plentiful over the past 10 years by both public and private investors. During the period of 2009 - 2013, St. Catharines welcomed over $1.2 billion in developments alone, this number has continued to increase with the addition of a number of new builds.

The city is focused on the redevelopment of its downtown and last year launched a website aimed at attracting investors to the downtown St. Catharines area - investinstc.ca. The city also provides financial incentives for investors and to encourage existing businesses to make improvements.

These Niagara cities have found success by driving investments through strong marketing of their economic potential. To view commercial real estate in St. Catharines click here and for real estate investment opportunities in Welland, click here.
